What If Apple Has Sold Fewer Than 1 Million iPhones?

I’m a bit sad about this news, reported here,

What If Apple Has Sold Fewer Than 1 Million iPhones

AT&T (T) announced today that it had only activated 146,000 Apple (AAPL) iPhones the first day that they were on sale. And, investment bank CIBC said that sales of the handset have slowed considerably in the last 10 days. CIBC said that AT&T Wireless stores had plenty of supply and little traffic.

The research call explains that customers are disappointed with Apple’s connection speed. It goes on to speculate that Apple and AT&T may be rushing to get out a 3G device by Christmas.

If the information is accurate, it means that the quarter that will be reported about 90 days from now could be a significant disappointment, and that eyes will be on Apple’s earnings report this week for info on how the device has sold in July.

Lateral Smile :-)

As a crowded airliner is about to take off, the peace is shattered by a 5-yearold boy who picks that moment to throw a wild tempertantrum. No matter what his frustrated, embarrassed mother does to try to calm him down, the boy continues to scream furiously and kick the seats around him.

Suddenly, from the rear of the plane, an elderly man in the uniform of an Air Force General is seen slowly walking forward up the aisle.

Stopping the flustered mother with an upraised hand, the white-haired, courtly, softspoken General leans down and, motioning toward his
chest, whispers something into the boy’s ear.

Instantly, the boy calms down, gently takes his mother’s hand, and quietly fastens his seat belt. All the other passengers burst into spontaneous applause.

As the General slowly makes his way back to his seat, one of the cabin attendants touches his sleeve. “Excuse me, General,” she asks quietly, “but could I ask you what magic words you used on that little boy?”

- What did the General do? /What did the General say to the boy?
(The old man smiles serenely and gently confides, “I showed him my pilot’s wings, service stars, and battle ribbons, and explained that they entitle me to throw one passenger out the plane door on any flight I choose.”)

COBOL and Sustainable Development

Think of Cobol when you think of sustainable development: The original developers of the Cobol language could not conceive of programs written in Cobol that would still be in use in 1999, and yet when the year 2000 came along, all of a sudden there was a huge demand to fix all the Cobol applications. Here’s a related joke:

It is the year 2000 and a Cobol programmer has just finished verifying that the Y2K fixes he has made to a computer system critical to the U.S. government are correct. The president is so grateful that he tells the programmer that he can have anything he wants. After thinking about it for a while, the programmer replies that he would like to be frozen and reawakened at some point in the future so he can experience the future of mankind. His wish is granted.

Many years pass. When the programmer is woken up, people shake his hand and slap him on the back. He is led on a long parade, with people cheering him as he goes to a huge mansion. The master of the universe greets him enthusiastically. Pleased but puzzled, the programmer asks the master of the universe why he has received such a warm reception. The master of the universe replies “Well, it’s the year 2999 and you have Cobol on your resume!

COBOL will never die…remember these words folks!

Lateral Smile :-)

Upon entering a little country store, a stranger noticed a sign reading, “Danger! Beware of Dog” posted on the glass door. Inside, he noticed a harmless old hound dog asleep on the floor besides the cash register.

He asked the store manager, “Is that the dog folks are supposed to beware of?”

“Yes, that’s him,” he replied.

The stranger couldn’t help but be amused.

“That certainly doesn’t look like a dangerous dog to me. Why in the world would you post that sign?”

-What did the owner say?

(“Because,” the owner replied, “before I posted that sign, people kept tripping over him.”)
